Il Giro d'italia, and Verona

Between the strade bianche rides, and the Dolomiti rides we designed the weekend to be in Verona and watch the final TT stage of the Giro.  What a delight Verona is!  Never having been there I didn't know how captivating it is, so took every opportunity to make a mental list of everything to do next visit.  Which hopefully will be soon.

DSC00659  Cool pic by Misty as we were unloading the cars (in the rain) outside the hotel.

DSC00668  Making friends with the locals near the Arena.  Given the myriad of events happening there, I think it is used more now than it was in Roman times.

DSC_4376  So good to see the local constabulary making friends with those in need.  Well timed photo by Victor here.

P5300421  We did an early morning ride around part of the TT course and crossed a very old bridge in the process.  We also found where the local grupettos marshalled, and discovered their secret training route (try along the river).  You can also see we bought up big in Cicli Pucciarelli in Montelupo.

DSC_0495  I want to say this was a fun shot, but I think Victor just really liked the hat.

DSC_0500  Lunch outside our favourite little pizza place run by Mama and daughter the cook, even grandmama came by to be part of the action.  The mama gave us heaps of advice and local lore.  We enjoyed the atmosphere so much we ate there twice.

DSC_0490  Pinarello team bikes for Team Sky.  As a biker, you just drool over all that expensive machinery.

DSC_0519  Back of Team BMC bus, showing Cadel Evans and big George Hincapie.  Oh, and more bikes.

DSC_0520  Cadel on the right.  2010 World Road Race champion.

DSC_0526  Guerciotti bikes, I've not seen in the US.  Looked cool.

DSC_0528  Gilberto Simoni, two time winner of the Giro.  This was his last Giro year, and well earned,

DSC_0533  Frantisek Rabon of HTC Columbia.  He had just given Adam Hansen some tips on the TT course.

DSC_0536  Italian road race champion, Fillipo Pozzato warming up.

DSC_0592  Team Caisse D'epargne.

DSC_0596  Ivan Basso in the winner's pink kit.  He ended winning the Giro - for the second time.

DSC_0627  Verona in the late afternoon light.  Simply lovely place.
